What the heck is a Christian Wiccan?
If ever there was a term that to me, sounded on the surface as oxymoronic, it is a Christian Wiccan.
Having read quite a few articles and seeing so many thoughts and opinions on the subject, I decided it would be prudent in this forum to put this information out there.
It seems if you look long enough one can easily find Christians who believe in Wicca, Wiccans who believe in Christianity and everywhere in between.
This is a strange phenomenon to me as I rely upon my Catholic teachings and beliefs to discern my own answer to the question the title of this article poses.
What is strikingly interesting is the growing interest of the Wicca ‘religion’ among teens in this day and time. This nature based ‘religion’ (I use this term loosely) has book publishers salivating to introduce the next big Wiccan best seller. According to an article by Mary Zurolo, “Dispelling the Charms of Wicca” written in 1999, “In the late 1980’s, sales of Wicca titles averaged 2,000 to 4,000 copies a year at Carol Publishing Group. Large publishers are cashing in on the substantial craze. Amazon.com offers some 75 titles on Wicca.” Today I did a search at Amazon and came up with a list of 1,204.
In that same article Ms. Zurolo asked why is Wicca so facinating to teens and found one answer from a web site by a 15-year-old ex-Catholic who said “One contributing factor that induced my change in religion was that it seemed as though the more religious I became, the worse my life did. I eventually gave up, and became non-religious.”
Most Wiccans worship a dual deity, the Horned God and the Lady and are revered equally.
In itself, this is a direct contradiction to being Christian and Wiccan as Christians believe in only one God.
I have read Wicca described as a neo-pagan form of witchcraft. The Catholic Church teaches against witchcraft. See CCC 2116 and 2117.
What about the Christian First Commandment? ”Thou shall have no Gods before me”; blatantly contrary to the belief of Wicca.
One online posting reveal many differing opinions from Christians and Wiccans alike; see examples here.
Exploring Wiccans in terms of Christianity leaves me with little doubt that a person can be one or the other, but not both at the same time.
Modern technology via the internet fills the palate of seekers looking for spiritual answers in all the wrong places. Easy are paths leading to mis-education, personal agendas, satanic forces and wrong information. Unlimited resources fill minds with the misconception that you can be a Christian Wiccan. There is no such thing. Don’t be fooled!
